Mel is a Mornington Peninsula-based artist working predominantly in graphite and watercolour — a practice that is daily, deliberate and ritualistic, with clay a constant companion for when the work needs to be felt rather than drawn.
Her work is informed by the experience of being human — the messy, unfinished parts especially. The quiet realisation that transformation doesn't have to be loud. Just steady, one mark at a time.
She seeks the extraordinary in the ordinary — botanicals, the female form, animals, organic shapes — drawn by curiosity and a love of detail. There's a tension between the held line and the pigment that moves where it wants to. She's not trying to resolve that tension. It's just where she works.
Collaboration is close to her heart — the conversations that happen when someone brings her a vision and she finds a way to bring it to life. That connection, she'll tell you, is one of her favourite parts of what she does. She makes art for the in-between seasons — for what we carry before we have words for it. The hope is simply that you find some quiet here.
